Helaman 5:29-33 - A Cry from the Darkness

"29 And it came to pass that there came a voice as if it were above the cloud of darkness, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants whom I have sent unto you to declare good tidings.
30 And it came to pass when they heard this voice, and beheld that it was not a voice of thunder, neither was it a voice of a great tumultuous noise, but behold, it was a still voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul—
31 And notwithstanding the mildness of the voice, behold the earth shook exceedingly, and the walls of the prison trembled again, as if it were about to tumble to the earth; and behold the cloud of darkness, which had overshadowed them, did not disperse—
32 And behold the voice came again, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand; and seek no more to destroy my servants. And it came to pass that the earth shook again, and the walls trembled.
33 And also again the third time the voice came, and did speak unto them marvelous words which cannot be uttered by man; and the walls did tremble again, and the earth shook as if it were about to divide asunder."
This passage reveals a sacred experience in which the Holy Ghost speaks to an unrepentant people from a cloud of darkness, which had previously decended upon them. It could be noted how this experience is similar to a later account in 3 Nephi where again, a still, small voice calls to the people three times to repent in a circumstance where darkness reigns.

Alma 59:9 - Avoiding Sin

"9 And now as Moroni had supposed that there should be men sent to the city of Nephihah, to the assistance of the people to maintain that city, and knowing that it was easier to keep the city from falling into the hands of the Lamanites than to retake it from them, he supposed that they would easily maintain that city."

Moroni insightfully observed how retaining a city was strategically easier than attempting to retake it. Similarly one should follow the same course in avoiding sin in the first place rather than transgressing the law and taking the more arduous path of repentance. As one builds their forces by following God's statutes, they are better prepared to resist any wicked influence that seeks to overtake their city.

Alma 57:1-4 - How to Conquer Temptation

"1 And now it came to pass that I received an epistle from Ammoron, the king, stating that if I would deliver up those prisoners of war whom we had taken that he would deliver up the city of Antiparah unto us.
But I sent an epistle unto the king, that we were sure our forces were sufficient to take the city of Antiparah by our force; and by delivering up the prisoners for that city we should suppose ourselves unwise, and that we would only deliver up our prisoners on exchange.
And Ammoron refused mine epistle, for he would not exchange prisoners; therefore we began to make preparations to go against the city of Antiparah.
But the people of Antiparah did leave the city, and fled to their other cities, which they had possession of, to fortify them; and thus the city of Antiparah fell into our hands."
One doesn't need to feel inclined to comprimise with the adversary concerning deliverance from temptation or recption of blessings. Only fraud and regret result from those kinds of interactions. Rather, one should be more focused on their personal preparation to, through their own merits with the aid of Christ, conquer the evil forces and temptations in their life.
